Psalm 113

1  Alleluia.
Give praise, you servants of the Lord, ♦︎
O praise the name of the Lord.
2  Blessed be the name of the Lord, ♦︎
from this time forth and for evermore.
3  From the rising of the sun to its setting ♦︎
let the name of the Lord be praised.
4  The Lord is high above all nations ♦︎
and his glory above the heavens.
5  Who is like the Lord our God,
that has his throne so high, ♦︎
   yet humbles himself to behold
the things of heaven and earth?
6  He raises the poor from the dust ♦︎
and lifts the needy from the ashes,
7  To set them with princes, ♦︎
with the princes of his people.
8  He gives the barren woman a place in the house ♦︎
and makes her a joyful mother of children.
      Alleluia.

Genesis 25: 19-28

The Birth and Youth of Esau and Jacob

19 These are the descendants of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham was the father of Isaac, 20and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, sister of Laban the Aramean. 21Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived. 22The children struggled together within her; and she said, ‘If it is to be this way, why do I live?’* So she went to inquire of the Lord. 23And the Lord said to her,
‘Two nations are in your womb,
   and two peoples born of you shall be divided;
one shall be stronger than the other,
the elder shall serve the younger.’
24When her time to give birth was at hand, there were twins in her womb. 25The first came out red, all his body like a hairy mantle; so they named him Esau. 26Afterwards his brother came out, with his hand gripping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob.* Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

27 When the boys grew up, Esau was a skilful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents. 28Isaac loved Esau, because he was fond of game; but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Colossians 1: 15-20

The Supremacy of Christ

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in* him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in* him all things hold together. 18He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.
